Green careers in infrastructure, or green building, are growing so much these days because of our society’s current obsession--a healthy obsession--with creating peace between Mother Nature and us. In the past, when we were much more primitive, we did this easily.
As humanity evolved, we began to force our surroundings to adapt to us, instead of the other way around. The truth is, this is a thrilling time to be alive! We can fly. We can talk instantly to someone on the other side of the planet, and even see them when we do so. We have machines that take care of the drudgery of daily existence. We can drive our cars now as much for pleasure as for going from A to B. We have loved ones and friends who are alive and well and still with us only because of modern medicine; and our homes are more comfortable, filled with more conveniences, than ever before. But now, it’s time to take a look at what we could do better.
Well, for one, we could create better homes. Green careers in infrastructure and green building involve designing new homes and buildings, and renovating older ones, so that they align with the 21st century drive towards harmonizing our Space Age aspirations and technology with the primal blueprint of our bodies and our environment. Green building involves making homes, hotels, office buildings, cleaner and less obtrusive for the environment. It is also healthier for the people who live and work in them. Green careers in infrastructure are also intended to save people money.
For instance, someone who gets into one of the green careers in infrastructure and green building today would probably give advice on how a building could use under-floor heating as opposed to forced-air vent heating. Under-floor heating has numerous advantages over the usual forced-air ventilation of today. For one thing, it is much more comfortable. Our feet are the true thermostats of our bodies. When our feet are warm, we are warm, as the heat going into our soles rises up through our bodies. If our feet are cold, even in an otherwise warm room, we feel rather uncomfortable. Thus, under floor heating systems let us be more comfortable yet turn down, rather then turn up, the thermostat--saving money. Also, the absence of the force-air vents means that we are breathing clean, healthy air in our buildings; not recycled, filthy air. There are other benefits, too, but you get the picture.
That is just one simple example of what green careers in infrastructure and green building would entail. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, you will find yourself at the cutting-edge of an industry that offers personal and financial reward.
